Which Sleep Test?
There are TWO options:
1. Simple Oximetry Sleep Test
The Simple Oximetry Sleep Test monitors your heart rate and blood oxygen levels throughout the night. You must also fill in a detailed medical questionnaire. In many cases, this alone may be sufficient to identify Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. For those with a BMI under 25, or above 40, then a Detailed Sleep Test would be required instead.
2. Detailed Sleep Test
The Detailed Sleep Test also records your body position, body movements, snoring intensity, and crucially your Peripheral Arterial Tone - a key physiological signal that can indicate respiratory disturbances during sleep. You must also fill in a detailed medical questionnaire.
All are conducted in the comfort and privacy of your own home and are completely confidential.
In simple terms:
If you are not overweight...
...with a BMI under 25...but you snore or suspect obstructive sleep apnoea, then the Detailed Sleep Test is the only option that will provide enough data for a conclusive opinion and accurately recommended treatment options.
If you are slightly to moderately overweight...
...with a BMI between 25 and 40...and you have never had any significant health issues, the Simple Oximetry Sleep Test is a great choice and in most cases is enough to seek treatment if the study shows a conclusive result. If you feel your condition is position-dependent (ie worse on your back) or want more detail about your sleep, the Detailed Sleep Test would be a better choice.
If you are extremely overweight...
...with a BMI between 40 and 45, the Detailed Sleep Test is the only option that gives enough data to investigate your sleep properly.
If you do have COPD, narcolepsy, neuromuscular disease or a history of heart problems...
...then none of the above studies are suitable for you and it is recommended that you talk to your doctor about the appropriate course of action.
