Which Sleep Study?

There are TWO options:

1. Finger Pulse Oximetry Sleep Study

The Finger Pulse Oximetry sleep study monitors your heart rate and blood oxygen levels throughout the night. You must also fill in a detailed medical questionnaire. In many cases, this alone may be sufficient to identify Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. For those with a BMI under 25, or above 40, then a Multi-Channel Respiratory Study would be required instead.

2. Multi-Channel Respiratory Sleep Study

The Multi-Channel Respiratory sleep study also records your heart rate and blood oxygen levels, but additionally monitors chest resistance, respiratory flow, body position and other data channels to form a more in-depth picture of your sleep. You must also fill in a detailed medical questionnaire.

All are conducted in the comfort and privacy of your own home and are completely confidential.

In simple terms:

If you are not overweight...

...with a BMI under 25...but you snore or suspect obstructive sleep apnoea, then the Multi-Channel Sleep Study is the only option that will provide enough data for a conclusive opinion and accurately recommended treatment options.

If you are slightly to moderately overweight...

...with a BMI between 25 and 40...and you have never had any significant health issues, the Finger Pulse Oximetry sleep study is a great choice and in most cases is enough to seek treatment if the study shows a conclusive result. If you feel your condition is position-dependent (ie worse on your back) or want more detail about your sleep, the Multi Channel Respiratory sleep study would be a better choice.

If you are extremely overweight...

...with a BMI between 40 and 45, the Multi Channel Respiratory sleep study is the only option that gives enough data to investigate your sleep properly.

If you do have COPD, narcolepsy, neuromuscular disease or a history of heart problems...

...then none of the above studies are suitable for you and it is recommended that you talk to your doctor about the appropriate course of action.

Snoring can, for some be just snoring – however if you are in doubt at all, particularly if you are overweight and tired all the time, choose one of our sleep studies above. Knowing more about how you sleep and getting effective treatment, could have you back to leading a full and energetic life soon. If you are still unsure, just contact us and we will help you choose the correct one so you can get the sleep you deserve.
